MassDOT Opens Bids on Westfield Main Street-Broad Street Project
J.H. White & Sons of Rhode Island the Apparent Low Bidder
WESTFIELD- State Senator Michael R. Knapik (2nd Hampden & Hampshire) and State Representative Donald F. Humason, Jr. (4th Hampden) announced today that the Massachusetts Department of Transportation-Highway Division opened construction bids for the Main Street-Broad Street project in the City of Westfield. J.H. Lynch & Sons Construction of Cumberland, Rhode Island is the apparent low bidder at $11,957,543, significantly below the $14,393,653 estimate. DOT officials will now review the bid package to ensure they meet all specifications and will work toward a contract to begin work on the project this spring.
Main Street and Broad Street are the two main feeder roads for Westfield’s core business district. Broad Street, which carries Routes 10 & 202, and Main Street, which serves Route 20, are heavily-traveled roadways and had scored highly on repeated Massachusetts Highway Department assessments measuring the importance of addressing congestion and deteriorating pavement conditions. The project will include full-depth reconstruction of the roadways, widening of travel lanes, enhanced traffic signalization, sidewalk replacement, and utility upgrades. There will also be limited improvements on the Park Square Green through this effort.
“This project represents an important investment in Westfield’s downtown infrastructure,” Knapik said. “This City has been fortunate to receive state and federal assistance over the past several years for this project, the ongoing Great River Bridge project, and the National Guard Bridges on Route 20,” he continued.
The Main Street-Broad Street project will be funded through a combination of stimulus funds and regional target transportation aid allotted by the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission’s Metropolitan Planning Organization.
“This project has been in the planning stages for many years,” Humason said. “I am hopeful it will allow for safer, more efficient, and more attractive gateway to our City’s historic downtown,” he added.
